About Mindroom

Mindroom is a Scottish charity dedicated to creating and raising awareness of learning difficulties. We are also passionate about providing direct help and support for children and adults with learning difficulties and their families.

Sophie Dow, a journalist and mother of two founded Mindroom in 2001. Her daughter Annie has severe learning difficulties and is the inspiration behind Mindroom.

Mindroom’s 2020 Vision

Mindroom's goal is to create such awareness, that by the year 2020 all children and adults in this country with learning difficulties will receive the recognition and help they need.

We will work towards our 2020 vision by:

  • Offering direct help and support
  • Arranging high profile conferences
  • Setting up multi-disciplinary diagnostic centres - Mindrooms

We are a recognised Scottish charity SC 030472.

We are also a company limited by guarantee and recognised in Scotland SC 209656

Mindroom is...

A positive voice

We are involved with a cross party group at the Scottish Parliament, to ensure that we positively influence any policies affecting children and adults with learning disabilities.

In 2008 we commissioned a major survey of 30,000 schools in the UK. It revealed that more than one in every five pupils has additional support for learning needs. This research is evidence of the need for the specialist services we provide.

Ground breaking

As well as providing vital support to professionals, individuals and families, we see the bigger picture.

Our long term goal is to set up the UK's first centre with a diagnostic clinic, research and educational facilities under one roof.

Until then, we will raise awareness about learning difficulties by collaborating with universities, employers, schools, the medical profession, social  services, the arts world, professional organisations and of course, families.

Award Winning

Mindroom has been recognised through awards. For us that is great news. It means we are making a difference and helps to raise awareness!

Our Founder Sophie Dow won an inspiring volunteer award this year. Sophie was delighted to pick up the award for 'innovation'. The awards are organised by the Edinburgh Volunteer Centre and Edinburgh City Council.

We won the Bigger Picture Award in 2006, in collaboration with the American Journal of Attention Disorders. The award encourages research into ADHD and co-existing difficulties.

Sophie was highly commended in the Third Beacon Prize for the third year consecutively in February 2007.
