Direct Help and Support

Mindroom's Direct Help and Support was launched in spring 2005.

Since then, we have provided direct help and support by phone, email and in person, around the corner and across the country to parents and professionals alike.

Mig Coupe, Head of Direct Help and Support says:"We are prepared to go anywhere and talk to anyone who requests us to do so! And there's no charge - only our travelling expenses."

Mig is a speech and language therapist with over 30 years experience working with children. She has a specific interest in communication problems and people with special learning needs.

Flora's story Flora Mackay

Flora was at rock bottom, in the final year of her degree struggling with severe hearing loss and dyslexia. She was finding it so hard she could barely get out of bed in the morning, nevermind think about studying. Flora found out about Mindroom from her mum and was introduced to Mig. Flora felt able to tell Mig how things were for her, what her main difficulties were and what obstacles she was having to overcome, and how she was thinking of quitting. Mig was able to provide Flora with information which meant she could ask for more help from Edinburgh College of Art, as well as provide individual support on an ongoing basis. Flora was able to achieve her dream of obtaining a degree and is on her way to doing what she loves.

As Flora says "If I hadn't received help from Mig I wouldn't have been able to stay at college and finish my degree, I couldn't have done it without her".

Congratulations to Flora for persevering and overcoming her difficulties and getting her degree! We are glad Mindroom and Mig were able to help.

Susan's* story

“We were told our son probably had autism aged 4 and yet we only got the diagnosis aged 12. Throughout those years, my son was not catered for in the education system. It was really devastating for us and him, bullying and difficulties with school made our lives so much harder than they should have been.  Mindroom and Mig came into our lives and immediately made a difference, we had been struggling with the education system and Mig was able to give specific advice which resulted in a diagnosis and a subsequent support plan for school.  The relief was amazing and just to know that Mig is there has given me the confidence to speak forward for my child in difficult situations and to look at things logically without the emotion.

A huge thank you to Mindroom which is amazing - and my sincere thanks to Mig who came to our house, is at the end of the phone and only a click away on email.  My son is still struggling, but there is hope for us now that we are educated about the rights for children and that has been such a relief.”
