Briefing 1- Learning difficulties and exclusion

Our research in UK-wide data on exclusion from school shows that young people with certain additional support needs (ASN) are at higher risk of exclusion than their peers. We recommend early intervention to prevent exclusion.

Briefing 2 – Parental support

An exploratory study of professionals’ perspectives on decision-making around children with learning difficulties. Within our findings, professionals told us that they viewed decision-making as a collaborative discussion with parents about ways forward. However, we noted less inclusion of children’s views in the process.

Briefing 3 – Parent experiences of accessing information

An exploratory study on experiences of parents of children with learning difficulties. We found, for example, that parents and carers wanted to know what to do – but also wanted someone to talk to about their experiences.

Briefing 4 – Mainstream schooling

An exploratory study around young people with learning difficulties. We asked, ‘What factors are key to a positive experience of mainstream schooling?’. Our findings include that relationships and respect and the overall feel of the school were important to the young people, their parents and the school staff.

Briefing 5 – Autism and bilingualism

SMRC conducted 3 main studies working with autistic children and adults to understand the impact of different languages on development. Their findings showed that bilingualism can be a valuable tool for cognitive and socio-emotional development.

A study on autistic communication and peer engagement conducted by SMRC. Their findings include that autistic people feel more comfortable around other autistic people and recommend peer-support mentoring models.
